Mt Washington Revisited

Mt Washington, New Hampshire has always been a fascinating place when it comes to weather. It is one of the coldest weather stations and is the location of the highest recorded wind speed of 231 miles per hour. It is probably the windiest weather station on earth. The summit feels hurricane force winds on average one out of every three days. One of the most unique sites is the build up of rime ice (pronounced rhyme). I traveled to the top of Mt Washington back in the late 1980s. It was October, and although there was not much snow at the top we did see a fair amount of rime ice. I was amazed as I broke off a chunk and felt how light it was. It was like holding frozen air. Mt Washington was featured in the most recent issue of National Geographic. Take a look at the web site for the Observatory. It's a neat place to visit from time to time.
